Ora Cogan Announces Sacred Bones Debut Hard Hearted Woman and Releases Honey Track

Ora Cogan will release Hard Hearted Woman on March 13th through Sacred Bones Records. The album’s first single, “Honey”, arrives with a video directed by Paloma Ruiz-Hernandez. The song is accompanied by a video directed by Ruiz-Hernandez.

The director described the concept as “an existence of absurdity where everyone is simultaneously isolated in their own loneliness and drowning in collective longing and lust.”

Cogan grew up on an island in the Salish Sea. Her father worked as a photojournalist and her mother as a musician who co-owned a recording studio. At 15, she left to apprentice as a silversmith. She later toured in Europe and the US while working various jobs. In Vancouver, she played fiddle in a drone-folk duo and participated in the city’s noise and experimental music scenes. A canoe journey with members of the Heiltsuk Nation preceded her shift away from music toward environmental justice work and human rights photojournalism.

After her father died, Cogan moved to Nanaimo, British Columbia, where she built a studio and began working with local musicians including Finn Smith, Nancy Pittet, and Kristopher Bowering, who has played with Orville Peck. These players now form her band. Her previous album, Formless, came out in 2023.

Hard Hearted Woman was recorded at Dream Club in Victoria with David Parry, who has worked with Loving, as well as in Cogan’s own studio in Nanaimo and remotely with Tom Deis. The album features musicians from country and experimental backgrounds. Cogan wrote the material during a winter spent swimming in rivers and the ocean, visiting her godmother in the Lillooet region, and in conversation with friends.
