Papa M’s Ballads of Harry Houdini offers six new tracks after a six-year hiatus
David Pajo, known for his work under the moniker Papa M, is set to release his latest album, Ballads of Harry Houdini, on November 22, 2024, through Drag City. This marks his return to the music scene six years after the release of his all-acoustic album A Broke Moon Rises. The new album features six tracks that depart from his previous acoustic work and explore new sonic territories, combining various guitar techniques and vocal arrangements.

The first single from the album, titled “Ode to Mark White,” is now available. Pajo recorded Ballads of Harry Houdini on his own, continuing his long-standing practice of solo production. The result is a set of six songs that incorporate both structured elements and improvised guitar solos, creating a varied and energetic sound.
Pajo’s career began in the 1990s with Slint, a band that became influential in post-rock circles. Following the band’s breakup, he collaborated with several prominent artists and bands, including Will Oldham, Stereolab, and Tortoise. In addition to these collaborations, he launched his solo career, originally under the name M, later evolving into Papa M. Throughout his career, Pajo has been known for his versatility as a musician, shifting between acoustic, electric, and experimental styles.
The new album is accompanied by a special vinyl release, with a limited edition in peach-colored vinyl. Pajo will also perform live in Los Angeles on October 10, 2024, at The Belasco with The Hard Quartet.

David Pajo, born June 25, 1968, is an American musician and songwriter known for his work in multiple genres, including post-rock, experimental rock, and acoustic music. He gained prominence as a guitarist in the influential post-rock band Slint, whose 1991 album Spiderland became a cornerstone of the genre. After Slint disbanded, Pajo’s career expanded as he worked with numerous artists across various genres. His collaborations include performances with Stereolab, Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Tortoise, and Interpol.
Pajo’s solo work began in the mid-1990s under the project name M, later evolving into Aerial M and finally Papa M.
