Thom Wasluck returns with a full-length LP after Below the House

Planning for Burial, the long-running solo project of Thom Wasluck, has released a new single and video titled You Think, the second track made public from the upcoming album It’s Closeness, It’s Easy, due out May 30 via The Flenser.

You Think has appeared in live sets for years, surviving an earlier version of the album that Wasluck ultimately scrapped. The final studio version retains much of the track’s core elements but includes revised lyrics and a stronger vocal presence than his past work. According to Wasluck, the track deals with attempts at clarity following a prolonged period of self-sabotage. The video, directed by Alana Wool, draws directly from the visual template of The Replacements’ Bastards of Young, responding to expectations within the current media landscape by deliberately withdrawing from them.

In a statement accompanying the release, Wasluck described the creative rationale behind the video as a response to the demand for artists to act as full-time content producers: “It often feels anti-art.”

The album was recorded in concentrated sessions over two years. Rather than piecing tracks together across time, Wasluck opted for short bursts of focused activity. The writing emphasizes endurance, personal attrition, and small domestic shifts rather than any grand transformation. Its tone is subdued and inward, dealing with themes that are neither rare nor spectacular—aging pets, persistent grief, long-term solitude, and residual trauma.

Wasluck continues to manage every aspect of the project alone—recording, artwork, and logistics—adhering to a self-sufficient model rarely seen on the scale of national and international touring. He will embark on a multi-date North American tour beginning May 31, with performances including acoustic sets and full band lineups. Select dates include appearances with Stander, Drowse, Mamaleek, Patience, Ophelia, Malevich, Nightosphere, and Masoller.

Planning for Burial originated in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and has been active since 2005. Wasluck released his debut full-length Leaving in 2009 through Enemies List Home Recordings, a label operated by Have a Nice Life‘s Dan Barrett. His first collaboration with The Flenser, Desideratum, followed in 2014. The next record, Below the House (2017), marked a turning point in visibility, earning a wider reception without altering the project’s internal mechanics. In 2018, Wasluck was invited to perform at London’s Meltdown Festival, curated that year by Robert Smith of The Cure.
