“Velvet Hole In the Head” is streaming now; the full album follows on May 29 via SKiN GRAFT Records

Point Line Plane have made “Velvet Hole In the Head” available today on Bandcamp. The track is the sixth on their self-titled debut album, due May 29, 2026, via SKiN GRAFT Records.

The album is the first vinyl pressing of a record originally co-released on CD by Xeroid Records and Sincere Brutality, unavailable for over two decades. The Portland synth and drums duo, formed by Joshua Blanchard and Nathan Carson, recorded the material at Old Distjecta, produced alongside Mookie K, who also engineered with assistance from Merlin Carson. Remastering for this edition was handled by Justin Weis from the original tapes.

The duo was active between roughly 2002 and 2005, playing somewhere in the range of 150 to 200 shows across the United States, many of them 20-minute sets built for maximum impact in minimum time. Blanchard and Carson came out of Portland’s early 2000s experimental scene having previously played in separate projects; Carson had co-founded the doom metal band Witch Mountain in 1997, while Blanchard’s background included stints in Delano and The Kremlin Bronx, as well as work as a church organist and crematory operator. They built their material from keyboards, drums, and voice, without a guitar. Their bills included Deerhoof, Thurston Moore, US Maple, Don Caballero, and Melt-Banana (read our interview with Melt Banana); their records reached number one on KDVS and received airplay from John Peel.

Early sets were physically intense. As the band’s run extended, the material shifted toward slower, denser structures, which fed into the sophomore album Smoke Signals (2004), recorded for SKiN GRAFT after the band briefly expanded to a trio. During the same period they also scored Haunters, an unreleased haunted-house documentary.

The reunion was triggered in September 2025 when Blanchard texted Carson about a dream involving a PLP reunion. Speaking to Retrofuturista, Blanchard said of returning to a live drummer after fifteen years of working with drum machines: “I have missed the chaos of playing with a live drummer; hearing the 4-count of the sticks and just launching into it with this urgency.” Carson, whose intervening years were spent primarily with Witch Mountain at considerably lower tempos, was more concise: “After playing primarily at 80bpm in Witch Mountain for the last 20 years, I had forgotten how goddamn fast I used to play.”
