Stunt Drummer Recorded Warm Up, Tiger Live in One Room With Almost No Overdubs

Stunt Drummer, made up of Marty Buckenmeyer (guitar, vocals), Erik Becker (guitar, vocals), Ethan Schee (bass) and J Leaver (drums), follow their 2023 self-titled debut with a second album, Warm Up, Tiger. The nine tracks were recorded live in a small room with minimal overdubs, a choice the band has said keeps the unpredictability of their shows intact. Songs reportedly rarely start finished; riffs, mistakes and half-ideas get pushed together until something holds.

The opener “Pool” begins with group chants and the line “everyone in this place is gonna drown,” while “Voodoo,” near six minutes long, slows into a droning passage well past punk’s usual tempo. The closer “Dress” settles into noise-based hypnosis, and “Paul, The Pear Farmer” pairs an absurd narrative with what the band calls real emotional weight. Buckenmeyer and Becker trade vocal roles throughout, moving between abrasive, melodic, deadpan and confrontational deliveries, sometimes within the same song. Lyrically, the album draws on surreal imagery, gallows humor and material the band describes as drawn from real events.

The title is described by the band as part joke, part warning, part nonsense. Marty Buckenmeyer put it directly: “You’re probably not ready for what you’re about to listen to.” Asked about their ideal setting, the band answered: “A medium-sized, dimly lit bar with cheap drinks and free Narcan, in front of the restroom door.”
