Rose McDowall Sorrow Sleep Now Forever
Title: Sleep Now Forever
Artist: Rose McDowall
Release Date: 2024-11-29
Genres: Folk Rock, Industrial Music, Psych-folk
Description: Sorrow’s final album, Sleep Now Forever, reissued on vinyl and digital, captures haunting neo-folk with Rose McDowall’s defining vocals.

Initially distributed on CD through World Serpent and produced at Velvet Hole, the album suffered from limited reach due to the distributor’s financial collapse in the early 2000s. Its remastering by Mikey Young marks its first release on vinyl (limited to 500 black 2LPs), featuring an exclusive etching by Glasgow artist Holly Allan on one side.

Recorded with Robert Lee and collaborators like Nigel McKernaghan (Uilleann pipes), John Contreras (cello), and Lawrence Frankel (oboe), the album’s eleven tracks are both haunting and expansive. Notable tracks include ‘Soldier,’ which features layered, multi-tracked vocals set against sparkling guitar and percussion, while ‘Love Dies’ brings McDowall’s harmonium-supported vocals into a slow, transcendent lament. McDowall’s lyrics explore themes of mental health, spirituality, and redemption, reinforced by intricate arrangements that resonate with the neo-folk and industrial influences of the late 90s.
