David Charles Rodrigues captures the final months of Genesis P-Orridge

The feature documentary S/he Is Still Her/e will open in cinemas across the UK and Ireland on 20 June 2025. Directed by David Charles Rodrigues, the film documents the final year of Genesis P-Orridge, incorporating archival material and new footage to construct a direct portrait of the artist’s final months. Special preview events will begin on 12 June, accompanied by Q&A sessions featuring Genesse P-Orridge, with further guests to be announced.

The film, authorised by P-Orridge prior to their death, contains previously unreleased material from the Throbbing Gristle and Psychic TV archives, personal video diaries, and encounters with various collaborators and spiritual figures. It includes appearances by William Burroughs, Brion Gysin, Timothy Leary, Alice Genese, and David J. The structure alternates between performance documentation and private moments, with minimal editorial commentary.

Rodrigues, who previously directed Gay Chorus Deep South (2019), followed P-Orridge over the course of a year marked by terminal illness and renewed attention to the body as both medium and limit. The film’s stated focus is not retrospective or interpretative but records P-Orridge’s final decisions and self-presentations in the period leading up to their death in 2020.

The screenings are presented by Doc’n Roll Films, with support from the BFI, which channels National Lottery funds toward expanded access to cinema for LGBTQIA+ audiences. Screenings will be programmed in both major cities and regional centres.

Genesis P-Orridge (1950–2020) was a British artist, performer and musician. Born Neil Andrew Megson in Manchester, P-Orridge was educated at Solihull School and later attended the University of Hull. P-Orridge co-founded the performance group COUM Transmissions in the late 1960s, followed by Throbbing Gristle in 1975, often credited with defining the parameters of industrial music. In 1981, they formed Psychic TV, which developed into an open-ended multimedia project, incorporating experimental music, video art, and occultist symbolism.

P-Orridge’s later work focused on issues of identity, often through the lens of body modification and gender nonconformity. The Pandrogyne Project, developed with their partner Lady Jaye Breyer P-Orridge, sought to create a single identity across two bodies through surgery, dress, and ritual. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, P-Orridge published texts, exhibited visual art, and performed internationally. Their work regularly engaged with chaos magic, tantra, and cut-up technique, often in collaboration with figures from countercultural and esoteric traditions.

David Charles Rodrigues is a Brazilian-born filmmaker based in Los Angeles. He began his career as a graphic novelist and transitioned to documentary filmmaking. His 2019 documentary Gay Chorus Deep South won the Tribeca Audience Award and was included in the Academy Museum’s permanent collection. Rodrigues has directed for platforms including Netflix and Apple TV, including the series Neymar: The Perfect Chaos (2022) and an episode of Omnivore (2024) featuring chef René Redzepi.
