Recorded across various locations on the West Coast, the album’s thematic architecture addresses endurance on two specific scales. The opening title track, “Marathon,” references a specific gas station logo from the artist’s childhood—a glowing “M” that functioned as a navigational beacon. Maria BC is a songwriter and multi-instrumentalist originally from Ohio, later based in Brooklyn and the West Coast. Their debut EP, Devil’s Rain, was released in 2021, followed by the full-length album Hyaline in 2022 on Father/Daughter Records and Fear of Missing Out. They signed to Sacred Bones for the release of 2023’s Spike Field. Often categorized within the “ambient folk” movement, their professional output is characterized by a background in choral music and classical vocal training, elements that inform the layered arrangements and pitch precision found across their discography.
