Description: Scattered Purgatory announce Post Purgatory album for January 30th via Guruguru Brain. Taipei duo share Wunai track from doom metal and electronic record.

The album arrives after a three-year break following the pandemic. The band has stated that loss and uncertainty during this period informed the record, with time functioning as the central theme. Post Purgatory moves away from the mountain-scale drone work of earlier releases toward digital production methods and clearer structures. Downtempo rhythms sit alongside doom metal guitar, with contemporary sound design and granular sampling techniques throughout.

Recording took place partly at home and partly at the studio where the band made their first album. The lyrics switch between Taiwanese, traditional Chinese, and English, reflecting Taipei’s linguistic environment. The band cites influences from Hokkien and Mando pop, as well as trip-hop. Guest musicians include White Wu on drums, Minyen Hsieh on tenor saxophone, and dotzio on vocals.

Scattered Purgatory formed in Taipei in 2013. Their debut Lost Ethnography of the Miscanthus Ocean appeared in 2014, followed by God of Silver Grass in 2016. Both albums employed dense instrumental drones, improvisational guitar, and ambient textures. The project initially operated as a duo before expanding. Their work has incorporated elements of Krautrock, minimalist electronic music, and heavy drone, while maintaining a connection to Taiwanese geography and urban environments. The band’s sound has evolved from drone and ambient folk toward electronic production and metal structures.
