Description: The Gits are back. Discover the Sub Pop remaster project celebrating the legendary Mia Zapata and the iconic Seattle punk band.

The Gits emerged from Antioch College, Ohio in 1986. The group consisted of Mia Zapata (vocals), Andy Kessler (guitar), Matt Dresdner (bass), and Steve Moriarty (drums). In 1989, they relocated to Seattle’s Capitol Hill district, establishing their base at “the Rathouse,” which functioned as both living space and rehearsal facility.

Mia Zapata (1965-1993) combined punk intensity with blues tonalities in her vocal performances. Her stage presence incorporated raw emotional delivery while maintaining technical precision. Before her death, Atlantic Records A&R representative Tim Sommer had arranged to sign the group, with negotiations concluding four days prior to her passing.

The band recorded on several independent labels, including C/Z Records. Their releases included multiple seven-inch singles: “Precious Blood” (Big Flaming Ego Records), “Second Skin” (Broken Rekids, 1991), and “Spear & Magic Helmet” (Empty Records, 1991). The compilation “Bobbing For Pavement” appeared through Rathouse/Broken Rekids in 1991.

Zapata’s murder in 1993 led to significant developments in DNA forensic science. The case remained unsolved until 2003, when DNA evidence identified Jesus Mezquia as the perpetrator. He received 36 years imprisonment in 2004. Following her death, friends established Home Alive, providing self-defense education until 2010. Multiple artists paid tribute through music and film, including 7 Year Bitch’s “¡Viva Zapata!” album (1994) and director Kerri O’Kane’s documentary “The Gits” (2005).

The band’s music combines punk rock and post-hardcore elements with blues foundations. Their technical proficiency and songwriting earned substantial recognition within Seattle’s music community. The upcoming remasters through Sub Pop Records maintain the original recordings’ sonic characteristics while enhancing audio quality through contemporary mastering techniques.
