Drag City will release Hillbilly Ragas on September 26

Sir Richard Bishop releases another track from his forthcoming album Hillbilly Ragas, due September 26 via Drag City. The latest single, “Pass the Juggernaut”, arrives with a color-saturated video that mirrors the album artwork’s palette while Bishop’s guitar strings vibrate in parallel chaos.

Title: Hillbilly Ragas
Artist: Richard Bishop
Release Date: 2025-09-26
Genres: Americana, Experimental Music, Folk, Psych-folk
Label: Drag City
Description: Sir Richard Bishop previews Hillbilly Ragas, out Sept 26 via Drag City, with Pass the Juggernaut, a stark solo guitar piece and video.

Hillbilly Ragas presents nine pieces of solo acoustic guitar recorded without overdubs. Bishop describes the album as an excursion into dark woods, positioning himself against melodic predictability. The material draws from the American Primitive tradition while applying his own interpretive methods, seeking what he calls the style’s “moonshine-fed inner savage.”

Richard Bishop emerged from Saginaw, Michigan in 1960 and spent 26 years as guitarist and founding member of Sun City Girls alongside Charles Gocher and Alan Bishop. He began performing solo in 2005, touring extensively with Will Oldham, Animal Collective, Devendra Banhart, and Bill Callahan. His first official solo record, Salvador Kali, appeared on John Fahey’s Revenant Records in 1998. His catalog includes releases on Locust Music, Southern Records, VDSQ, Editions Mego, Unrock, and Drag City.

Bishop has scheduled tour dates across the United States and Europe for autumn 2025:
