Italian composer and guitarist Stefano Pilia has released the single Lacinia Off Axis. The track, performed by Ensemble Concordanze, is part of the forthcoming album Lacinia, scheduled for release in February 2025. The album will be distributed by the Milan-based label Die Schachtel in collaboration with SZ Sugar/Universal.
The upcoming album continues Pilia’s exploration of themes tied to numerology, geometry, and the intersection of metaphysics with sound structures. This work builds upon the conceptual framework introduced in the 2022 album Spiralis Aurea. Pilia’s compositions integrate acoustic and electroacoustic methods with chamber music and drone, drawing influence from ancient liturgical and devotional music traditions.
Italian composer and guitarist Stefano Pilia, originally from Genoa, has an extensive career in experimental and contemporary music. Collaborative projects include Il Sogno Del Marinaio with Mike Watt, and recordings with artists such as David Tibet (Current 93), David Grubbs (Gastr del Sol, Codeine), John Parish, Phill Niblock, and Oren Ambarchi. Pilia has contributed to experimental and contemporary music through solo releases and collaborations with ensembles like Fire Orchestra!.
Pilia’s work frequently incorporates mathematical and philosophical concepts into musical composition. Performances often feature varying instrumental configurations, including live and recorded works with ensembles such as the Spiralis Aurea Trio, featuring Giuseppe Franchellucci and Mattia Cipolli on cellos alongside Pilia on electric guitar and electronics.
The Album “Lacinia”
The album Lacinia reflects Pilia’s ongoing engagement with cyclical time, tonal forms, and abstract sound architectures. The compositions feature diverse instrumentations, including string quartets, electroacoustic configurations, and percussion. The title, derived from the Latin word for “lace,” suggests interconnected structures and recurring motifs, aligning with themes of transformation and eternal return.
The single Lacinia Off Axis introduces the album’s tone and compositional approach. It is performed by Ensemble Concordanze, consisting of Pietro David Caramia (violin), Elena Maury (violin), Alessandro Savio (viola), and Mattia Cipolli (cello).
Upcoming Performances
Pilia will present Lacinia through a series of live performances with various configurations. Highlights include:
- November 17, 2024: World premiere of Cadux / Plectere I, performed by flutist Manuel Zurria at the Museum of Photography in Mestre, Venice.
- November 23–27, 2024: Performances by the Spiralis Aurea Trio in Bologna, Correggio, and Piacenza, supported by Suner Arci and the Emilia Romagna Music Commission.
- Additional concerts featuring the Spiralis Aurea guitar trio, with Alessandra Novaga and Adrian Utley (Portishead), will be announced soon.
Lacinia will be available as a double vinyl and CD edition with artwork by Bruno Stucchi / Dinamomilano, designer of the packaging for Spiralis Aurea. The album will be released through Die Schachtel, a prominent label for contemporary and experimental music. Digital distribution will be handled by SZ Sugar/Universal.
