‘Lacinia’ Explores Numerology and Geometry in Sound

Stefano Pilia, Italian composer and guitarist, will release his new album, ‘Lacinia‘, on February 25th, 2025, via Die Schachtel and SZ Sugar. The album follows Pilia’s work with groups such as Il Sogno Del Marinaio (with Mike Watt) and Sulla Lingua, as well as his collaborative live release with Alessandra Novaga and Adrian Utley (Portishead) as the Spiralis Aurea Trio.

Pilia’s past collaborations include work with David Grubbs (Gastr del Sol, Codeine, The Red Krayola), David Tibet (Current 93), Oren Ambarchi, John Parish, Fire Orchestra!, Phill Niblock, Z’ev, Andrea Belfi, Valerio Tricoli, and Dean Roberts, among others.

‘Cadux / Plectere I‘, the second single from the album, is available now, following the release of ‘Lacinia Off Axis’. Performed by Manuel Zurria on flute trio, ‘Cadux / Plectere I’ was written specifically for Zurria by Pilia. The album, ‘Lacinia’, develops compositional concepts Pilia first introduced on his 2022 album, ‘Spiralis Aurea’. ‘Lacinia’ comprises compositions for various ensembles, including string quartet, combinations of synths and strings, horns and organ, electroacoustic instruments, and percussion.

The Spiralis Aurea Trio, consisting of Giuseppe Franchellucci and Mattia Cipolli on cellos and Pilia on electric guitar and electronics, will perform ‘Lacinia’ material throughout Italy with support from Suner Arci and Emilia Romagna Music Commission. Live performances will take place before the album’s release.

‘Lacinia’ will be available on vinyl and CD, with artwork by Bruno Stucchi / Dinamomilano. Die Schachtel, Milanese label focused on Italian experimental and artistic music, will handle the physical release. SZ Sugar / Universal will manage the digital release.

Stefano Pilia is an Italian composer and guitarist who has been active in experimental music since the early 2000s. He is founding member of the band 3/4HadBeenEliminated. His work often involves exploring the intersection of sound with space, memory, and time. Pilia has released music on various labels, including House of Mythology, Hapna, Die Schachtel, Soleilmoon, and Bluechopsticks/Drag City. He has performed extensively throughout Europe and the USA. In 2016, he collaborated with Katia Labeque and David Chalmin, and French dancer Marie-Agnès Gillot, performing with Bryce and Aaron Dessner of The National and Bon Iver at the Paris Philharmonie.
