Moor Mother and SUMAC announce The Film for April 2025 on Thrill Jockey

The Film is the result of a collaboration between SUMAC and Moor Mother, recorded at Studio Litho with engineer and mixer Scott Evans. Composed of Aaron Turner (guitar), Nick Yacyshyn (drums, synth), and Brian Cook (bass), SUMAC created the instrumental framework before Moor Mother (Camae Ayewa) added her vocals and lyrics. The album sits somewhere between metal, noise, and spoken word—built from dense, improvised structures and fragmented electronics. The album will be released through Thrill Jockey on April 25.

The record features a series of extended tracks, marked by heavy, dirging sections, dissonant interplay, and spoken passages that draw on both personal and historical violence. Moor Mother’s texts were written in direct response to SUMAC’s instrumentals, resulting in a set of compositions where timing and narrative rupture standard structures. Her vocal contributions avoid traditional cadence, instead occupying an antagonistic role within the mix—colliding with the instrumentation rather than riding on top of it.

Only two tracks—“Scene 1” and “Hard Truth”—are currently cleared for radio broadcast. The rest of the record is under embargo until the official release.

Camae Ayewa, who performs under the name Moor Mother, is a multidisciplinary artist from Philadelphia whose work spans music, poetry, and radical pedagogy. Her solo recordings mix industrial textures, field recordings, and spoken text, often anchored in historical and political narratives. In addition to her solo projects, she is a founding member of the collective Black Quantum Futurism and a core voice in the free jazz ensemble Irreversible Entanglements, which merges improvisation with anti-colonial critique.

Ayewa’s previous collaborations have included work with musicians across experimental, jazz, and hardcore scenes. Projects such as Moor Jewelry and records like Analog Fluids of Sonic Black Holes and Black Encyclopedia of the Air maintain a focus on resistance, memory, and technology. Outside of performance, she also teaches composition at the University of Southern California and continues to work across disciplines, including sound installation and literary publication.
