Three BBC Peel recordings from Swell Maps surface officially in 2025
The three Swell Maps sessions recorded for John Peel between 1978 and 1980 will be released officially for the first time on CD and digital formats on 12 September 2025 via Mute. The collection, remastered and previously available only in fragments or unofficial pressings, was first reissued in April 2025 as part of Record Store Day in a limited red vinyl edition. The tracks document a short-lived, loosely organised unit operating at full capacity on BBC Radio 1.

Description: A review of the Swell Maps' remastered John Peel Sessions. Discover the raw, experimental sound of the band that shaped post-punk and lo-fi history.
The sessions took place on 24 October 1978, 9 May 1979, and 6 March 1980, all recorded at the BBC’s Maida Vale Studios and originally broadcast on Peel’s late-night programme. Among them, the 1979 session features a version of Midget Submarines, which preceded the release of the band’s debut LP A Trip to Marineville by a matter of weeks.
Formed in Solihull in the mid-1970s, Swell Maps functioned less as a band than as a collective with no fixed centre. The members—Nikki Sudden, Epic Soundtracks, Jowe Head, Biggles Books, Phones Sportsman, and Golden Cockrill—operated under pseudonyms, producing fragmented material on primitive equipment, issuing early releases through their own Rather Records imprint. Their first single, Read About Seymour, appeared in 1977, followed by two full-length albums (A Trip to Marineville and Jane From Occupied Europe) and a trail of recordings, live fragments, and home-produced experiments.
John Peel was among the few to give early radio play to their debut, and the band appeared visibly surprised when it was broadcast. The BBC sessions recorded over the next two years capture the group operating within the constraints of studio time while still refusing to conform to it. The performances are disjointed, percussive, and often barely held together.
After disbanding in 1980, Nikki Sudden pursued a solo career and collaborated with Dave Kusworth in Jacobites, while Epic Soundtracks joined Crime & the City Solution and later played with These Immortal Souls and Rowland S. Howard. Jowe Head went on to join Television Personalities and released solo work through labels including Glass and Topplers. Posthumous attention increased following the deaths of Sudden (2006) and Soundtracks (1997), but most of the group’s catalogue remained out of print or circulated in lo-fi rips until sporadic reissues began in the 2000s.
The 2025 edition of The John Peel Sessions marks the first time all three recordings have been issued officially and in sequence outside of radio circulation. The remastering restores some of the clarity lost in earlier bootlegged formats, but the recordings remain unpredictable and fragmented—true to form.
