New album Unknown Beyond by Tan Cologne out 20 June
Tan Cologne, the duo of Lauren Green and Marissa Macias, return with a third full-length titled Unknown Beyond, scheduled for release via Labrador Records. The album was written, performed, and recorded in Taos, New Mexico, where the pair live and work. It follows their 2022 LP Earth Visions of Water Spaces and their 2023 field recording project Pescetrullo (soundscapes), and continues their pattern of recording in relative seclusion, with self-imposed thematic frameworks and minimal outside input.

Description: Tan Cologne announce their new album Unknown Beyond out 20 June 2025 on Labrador Records written and recorded in Taos New Mexico.
The new material shifts focus from the elemental to the speculative. While earlier albums were thematically tied to geological formations or water systems, Unknown Beyond revolves around ambiguous or non-physical presences. The songs emerged while the two were navigating multiple losses, including deaths of friends and family and the disappearance of familiar spaces. There is no central narrative. Instead, recurring images and references—satellite dishes, burned buildings, shooting stars—function as signposts.
The album introduces changes in instrumentation. The duo, previously reliant on guitar, lap steel, and organic textures, have incorporated electronics and programmed percussion into their arrangements. Tracks like “Cool Star” and “Open to Communication” use minimal melodic structures, with emphasis placed on atmosphere and repetition. “You are the dreamer” is a short instrumental piece named after a window decal from a friend’s car, later involved in a local criminal incident, which the band cite as a strange posthumous connection. “Angels” was written during California wildfires and includes references to presences both absent and present.
Recording took place without a producer. The pair tracked and mixed the material themselves, working in a domestic setting. The process was extended across a period of personal upheaval. There is no mention of guest appearances.
In May 2025, Tan Cologne will join Trentemøller on a European tour. They are also scheduled for an artist residency in Marfa, Texas.
Tan Cologne was formed in New Mexico by Lauren Green, formerly of Mirror Travel, and visual artist Marissa Macias. Their first album Cave Vaults on the Moon in New Mexico was released in 2020 on Labrador Records. The second album, Earth Visions of Water Spaces, followed in 2022. The band’s work frequently intersects with environmental themes, drawing on geological and ecological imagery. Alongside their musical output, they have been involved in visual and installation-based projects, often incorporating field recordings and site-specific material.
