Artoffact Reissues Test Dept’s Formative Era With 26 Tracks New to Digital

Test Dept emerged from London’s early 1980s underground as architects of industrial music’s most uncompromising strain, wielding scrap metal and found objects as weapons against complacency. Now, after signing to Artoffact, the group—still anchored by founding members Paul Jamrozy and Gray Cunnington—prepares to excavate its formative years with a series of archival releases, beginning with Industrial Overture: Studio & Live Recordings 1982-1985.

Due 5th December, this four-disc compendium gathers 42 tracks spanning the band’s molten first phase: the 1983 cassette-only debut Strength Of Metal In Motion appears on CD for the first time, alongside Ecstasy Under Duress and Atonal & Hamburg, both absent from circulation for over thirty years. A fourth disc of previously unheard studio material includes two sessions for John Peel’s BBC Radio 1 programme. Twenty-six tracks make their CD and digital debuts; twelve have never surfaced in any format. Paul Lavigne handled the remastering, while Paul Jamrozy and Stefan Alt designed the five-panel ecopak housing a 24-page booklet with an essay by Test Dept scholar Alexei Monroe.

The group’s early ascent was marked by confrontation and solidarity. In 1984, they performed alongside the South Wales Striking Miner’s Choir, fusing industrial percussion with voices raised in defiance, raising funds and consciousness in equal measure. Their collaborative impulse gave birth to The Ministry of Power, an umbrella for multimedia events staged in derelict factories and other liminal spaces, marrying music with movement, theatre, film and direct action.

Recent years have seen the publication of Total State Machine (2015), a comprehensive chronicle of the group’s work and philosophy, followed by the 2019 album Disturbance and subsequent touring. In 2023, A/POLITICAL commissioned Furnace, a large-scale piece mounted in a defunct iron foundry in southern France—the first in an ongoing partnership yielding further works.

This autumn and winter, Test Dept return to the stage with a fully electronic set drawing on remixes of these early recordings and previews of new material slated for 2026. The shows promise the collision of aggressive percussion, industrial noise and experimental sound that has defined the group since its inception, accompanied by their signature visual assault.
