Description: Cairo trio The Dwarfs Of East Agouza sign to Montreal's Constellation Records for October album release featuring Maurice Louca, Alan Bishop, Sam Shalabi.
The group operates as a three-way collision between Maurice Louca, Alan Bishop, and Sam Shalabi. Their sound pulls from free jazz, krautrock, shaabi, noise, and North African rhythms, assembled through improvisation that moves between calculated chaos and hypnotic repetition. Louca‘s polyrhythmic loops and keyboard textures intersect with Shalabi‘s electric guitar spirals and Bishop‘s acoustic bass foundation, occasionally expanded with saxophone interventions.
More than ten years of live performances across Europe, North America, and the Middle East have produced what the band describes as telepathic musical communication. Their recorded output includes debut Bes on Nawa, the extended Rats Don’t Eat Synthesizers through Annihaya, The Green Dogs of Dahshur via Akuphone, and two live documents: Both Sides of the Curtain on Unrock and High Tide in the Lowlands through Sub Rosa. Each release captures different aspects of their improvisational method.
Maurice Louca emerged from Cairo’s experimental music scene in the early 2000s. He has released solo albums including Salute the Parrot and Elephantine, worked with groups like Bikya and Alif, and collaborated with Tamer Abu Ghazaleh and Khyam Allami. His compositions have been performed by orchestras including the Brussels Philharmonic.
Alan Bishop co-founded Sun City Girls with his brother Rick Bishop and Charles Gocher in 1979. The Arizona-based group released over 50 albums before Gocher‘s death in 2007. Bishop also runs Sublime Frequencies, a label focused on global underground music and field recordings. His solo work includes albums under the name Alvarius B.
Sam Shalabi operates between Montreal and Cairo, leading the large ensemble Land of Kush and running the Alien8 Recordings label. His projects include work with Molasses, Exhaust, and various improvised music collectives. He has released solo guitar albums and collaborated with musicians including Colin Stetson and Shahzad Ismaily.
