Transmission 359: Interview with Rafael Silveira

Rafael Silveira is an internationally renowned fine art artist celebrated for his surreal, psychologically resonant paintings that blur the line between imagination and reality. With a strong background in the graphic arts, he graduated in fine arts at the Federal University of Parana, Brazil, and received a degree in advertising from Centro Universitário Curitiba in 2002. His career began within the gritty, high-energy world of underground comics and graphic illustration. His early work for legendary publishers instilled in him a sharp sense of narrative and precise rendering. However, his interests shifted from illustration to painting when he became deeply interested in what happens inside the human mind and decided to explore and try to understand the causes of mental disturbance. His work is an exercise in exploring the boundary between the subconscious and the meticulously rendered, often feeling like a blend of classical oil painting, psychedelic pop, and vintage circus aesthetics. His visual language, rich in symbolism, narrative depth, and meticulous technique, leads him into a “fever dream” quality. After turning through the corners of human thought, which slowly decomposes into the deep soil of the collective unconscious, he decided to immerse himself in this dark matter and reach the mental energy at its invisible, raw element. This is part of the immaterial alchemy of his artworks.

He works across multiple mediums to create immersive environments. that challenge the viewer to step out of reality and into the fertile, chaotic soil of the subconscious. The frame as art is a hallmark of his creative signature: he carves intricate sculptural wooden frames that act as physical extensions of the painting’s narrative, turning each piece into a three-dimensional talisman. What begins as merely unusual evolves into something unsettling and thought-provoking. By challenging perspectives through activity and change, he pushes viewers outside their comfort zones and creates new opportunities for perception. He has achieved balance by living between waking and dreaming, maintaining an open mind, and engaging with local realities without losing his sense of direction. This ongoing cultural confrontation has garnered acclaim and attention across a number of international exhibitions. Over the years, from São Paulo and London to New York, he has gained recognition for his ability to offer a new perspective on reality, and his artwork has transcended the gallery world to achieve widespread public acclaim.

You started as a graphic artist in the 1990s before transitioning fully into painting. What sparked that shift from commercial illustration to fine art? How did your early work in fanzines and independent magazines influence your current surreal and symbolic visual language?

I believe that from that early period, a certain sense of humor remained, as well as a taste for bold colors and graphic elements. There is also a more cartoon-like style that reappears in my work from time to time. At a certain point, I realized that some of the illustration styles I was trying to achieve were actually oil paintings, so I began studying that technique.

Who were the artists or experiences that shaped your artistic voice most during your formative years?

As a child, I was exposed to MAD Magazine, which had a huge impact on me. From there, I became interested in artists from the American underground scene, such as Robert Crumb and Gilbert Shelton. Little by little, I also developed a strong interest in ephemera, old printed matter, and vintage advertisements. In many cases, I did not even know who the artists behind them were.

His works often explore themes of the unconscious, memory, and the human psyche, inviting viewers into dreamlike worlds where whimsy and introspection coexist.

What was one of the most difficult creative obstacles you’ve faced at the beginning of your career, and how did you overcome it?

I believe the greatest challenge is developing the ability to materialize ideas. It took me many years to achieve that, through persistence and resilience alone. It was a process of trial and error, and a lot of patience.

Your art frequently explores psychological and surreal themes. Do you see your paintings as narratives about the unconscious or as philosophical inquiries?

I see them as both. I think the unconscious is part of the mixture, part of this dimensional sandwich we call reality.

Much of your work blends classical painting techniques with contemporary pop imagery. Are you painting feelings in love with the past, or are you trying to reinterpret those styles to say something modern?

The language of classical painting is, to me, an interesting part of the collective unconscious. I like to begin there and use it as a starting point to create my own visual language.

Many works have a dreamlike quality with metaphorical elements. How do you balance narrative clarity with symbolic ambiguity?

I think reality itself is highly symbolic. Life speaks to us through symbols and signs. So I do not make such a strong distinction between dream and reality. They are just different moments of the same day.

He has established himself as a leading voice in modern figurative art, continually challenging the boundaries of perception and storytelling.

You often use incredibly ornate, sculptural frames that bleed into the painting itself. Do you view the frame as a “border” to keep the chaos in, or as an extension of the artwork’s physical reality? What inspired you to break the boundary between painting and object?

The rigidity of artistic disciplines has always challenged me, so I wanted to explore in a creative way the relationship between painting and sculpture. I have made painted sculptures, and also sculpted paintings. It is my creativity allowing itself to cross these boundaries in order to discover what exists beyond them.

How has living and working in Curitiba, a city with a rich cultural fabric, influenced the themes and aesthetic decisions in your work? How much of the vibrant, sometimes chaotic energy of Brazil seeps into your color palette, even when you are painting themes that feel universal or classical?

I believe our life experience will always be an important part of the mixture of elements present in a work of art. It is not made only of fluids and pigments. The energy of the person and the energy of the place are also there somehow. That chaotic Brazilian energy is certainly present in everything here, and different people deal with it in different ways. I believe chaos, color, and a kind of delirious joy are all ingredients in my creative mixture.

With warped reflections that evoke parallel dimensions, his paintings capture a surreal quality that lingers between reality and imagination, offering a fresh perspective on everyday life.

Your exhibition Circonjecturas was one of the most successful in the Oscar Niemeyer Museum’s history. What was the most surprising lesson from that experience?

The popularity of my work. It was a huge success with all kinds of audiences: children, teenagers, adults, elderly people; from complete laypeople to specialists. That broad reach was a great surprise to me.
