New Legal Matters Album Lost At Sea Joins Big Stir Records Catalog

The fourth studio album by The Legal Matters, titled Lost At Sea, is scheduled for release on February 27 through Big Stir Records. The ten-track collection follows the Michigan group’s previous long-players, The Legal Matters (2014), Conrad (2016), and Chapter Three (2021). The album will be available on vinyl, CD, and digital streaming platforms.

Formed in 2013, the trio consists of Keith Klingensmith, Andy Reed, and Chris Richards. For this recording, the band altered their established writing process. Rather than arriving at sessions with completed demos, the members developed songs from initial riffs, lyrical fragments, or melodic hooks provided by each individual. Richards identifies the album title as a reference to the contemporary political climate.

Production on Lost At Sea includes contributions from drummer Donny Brown, who also performed on the band’s third album. The tracklist includes the lead single “Everybody Knows,” followed by “The Message,” a song addressing cultural friction. Other tracks include “It Doesn’t Matter,” which incorporates a riff written by Reed and lyrics by Klingensmith, and the ballad “Slow Down.” The album concludes with “The Exit Signs,” a track that utilizes the band’s modular arrangement style.

The Legal Matters are an indie pop trio based in Michigan. Keith Klingensmith previously played in The Phenomenal Cats and founded the label Futureman Records. Andy Reed operates Reed Recording Co. in Bay City and has released music as a solo artist and with the band An American Underdog. Chris Richards maintains a solo career, often performing with his backing band, The Subtractions, and previously led the group Chris Richards and the Invisible Weevils. The band’s second album, Conrad, was issued by Omnivore Recordings, a label specializing in historical reissues and select new releases. Their work has been documented in year-end lists by publications including Popdose, MusicTAP, and I Don’t Hear A Single.
