Spanakopita is a seven-track release combining new material with previously unreleased recordings from the band’s archive. Mixes were handled by Carlos Bess, an engineer associated with the Wu-Tang Clan production circle; Will Brooks of Dälek; and Jason Furlow, also known as Nosaj, a producer affiliated with Nosaj Thing, New Kingdom, and a collaboration with Morcheeba, who more recently operates under the project name Wave Generators. Together, Furlow and Brooks have worked with The Veldt under the collective name Illuminutty (a.k.a. VELDT).

The lead single takes its thematic cue from the 1972 film Black Girl, directed by Ossie Davis, which follows a young Black dancer navigating social constraints in her pursuit of a professional career. The track draws on the film’s central tension without reproducing it literally, working instead through a dream-pop framework that the band connects, in part, to the lineage of A.R. Kane. According to Daniel Chavis, much of the EP’s material anticipates the direction of the group’s forthcoming full-length, scheduled for release this September.

The Veldt were founded in North Carolina during the 1980s by identical twins Daniel Chavis (vocals, guitar) and Danny Chavis (guitar). The band later relocated to New York City, where Japanese bassist and programmer Hayato Nakao joined the lineup. Their back catalog includes Afrodisiac, produced by Ray Shulman, whose production credits include work with The Sundays, Björk, and The Sugarcubes; the album appeared on Pitchfork’s list of the top 50 shoegaze albums. Until You’re Forever was included in Stereogum’s selection of the top 31 shoegaze tracks. Their more recent album Illuminated 1989 was produced by Cocteau Twins’ Robin Guthrie. Past collaborators and tourmates include TV on the Radio, Mos Def, Lady Miss Kier of Deee-Lite, A.R. Kane, The Pixies, Throwing Muses, Echo & The Bunnymen, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Oasis, and Living Colour, among others.
