Description: Reissues of TGCD1 and The Third Mind Movements by Throbbing Gristle arrive August 2024. Vinyl & CD editions feature rare recordings.
TGCD1, originally released in 1986 by The Grey Area of Mute, will be available on vinyl for the first time and on CD for the first time since its initial release. The album contains 42 minutes of studio recordings from Throbbing Gristle’s Martello Street studio, captured on a TEAC 8-Track recorder on 18 March 1979. This release includes a booklet with the original 1986 sleeve notes by the band, marking it as an essential part of Throbbing Gristle’s discography.
The Third Mind Movements, previously exclusive to the band’s final US tour in 2009, will be commercially available on CD for the first time and on vinyl. This album was recorded during the Desertshore sessions at the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) in London, featuring six live recordings. The album includes manipulated, time-stretched, and distorted samples, rhythmical breakbeats, and hypnotic electronic oscillations.

Formed in 1975, Throbbing Gristle arose from the ashes of the controversial COUM Transmissions art collective. The band – Genesis P-Orridge, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson, and Chris Carter – weaponized sound to challenge societal norms and push the boundaries of what could be considered music.
TGCD1, a collection of studio recordings from 1979, will see its first vinyl pressing. Captured at their infamous Martello Street studio, these tracks showcase TG’s raw, unsettling soundscapes. The included booklet, featuring the original 1986 sleeve notes, provides context for this pivotal moment in their discography.
The Third Mind Movements, previously a limited tour release, documents live recordings from London’s ICA. These six pieces delve into manipulated samples, distorted textures, and pulsing electronics – a testament to TG’s relentless experimentation.
“The Third Mind: First Movement,” an eight-minute track from the ICA sessions, has been made available online. This hypnotic, disquieting piece serves as a fitting introduction to the upcoming releases.

Throbbing Gristle’s influence permeates far beyond their initial 1975-1981 run. Their confrontational performances, use of found sounds, and custom-built electronics laid the groundwork for industrial music and continue to inspire artists pushing against the mainstream.
These reissues offer both seasoned listeners and the uninitiated a chance to immerse themselves in the unsettling, transformative world of Throbbing Gristle – a band that refused to conform and whose impact still reverberates through underground music scenes worldwide.
