New unreleased Throbbing Gristle tracks and performances in TG Berlin Box Set

The upcoming TG Berlin Box Set, scheduled for release on December 6, 2024, chronicles Throbbing Gristle’s performances and recordings in Berlin from 2005 to 2006. This release compiles previously unreleased material from live shows held at the Volksbühne theater, including New Year’s events that marked a significant period of creativity and reunion for the band. The box set is part of Throbbing Gristle’s collaboration with Mute Records.

Artist: Throbbing Gristle
Genres: Industrial Music
Description: Throbbing Gristle’s TG Berlin Box Set offers rare Berlin recordings from 2005, including live sessions, unreleased tracks, and exclusive visuals.

The set includes four CDs, a Blu-ray, a 10-inch vinyl record, and a booklet. The CDs capture a variety of performances and recordings, including the New Year’s Eve concert on December 31, 2005, and an improvised live soundtrack to Derek Jarman’s 1981 film In the Shadow of the Sun, presented on New Year’s Day, 2006. In addition to the live performances, the box set features studio recordings from the TG Berlin Studio Session held at Planet Roc (Funkhaus) studios. This session includes two previously unreleased tracks, Scabs & Saws and Wotwududo, as well as a new 48-minute instrumental piece, TG Berlin – 2005 – 2006.

The Blu-ray component offers footage of the complete New Year’s Eve concert, featuring performances of Convincing People, Slug Bait, Splitting Sky, Rabbit Snare, Almost A Kiss, Greasy Poo, Endless Not, Vow of Silence, and Hamburger Lady. This event previewed several tracks from the album Part Two: The Endless Not, which was later released in 2007. The included 10-inch vinyl highlights the final Throbbing Gristle single with Scabs & Saws on Side A and Wotwududo on Side B.

Formed in 1975 by Chris Carter, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (1950-2020), and Peter ‘Sleazy’ Christopherson (1955-2010), Throbbing Gristle was a pioneering British band associated with the industrial music genre. Known for its confrontational and experimental approach, the group’s early work challenged social norms, sparking controversies that included being labeled “wreckers of civilisation” by MP Nicholas Fairbairn in 1976. Notable early releases included The Second Annual Report of Throbbing Gristle (1977), D.O.A.: The Third and Final Report of Throbbing Gristle (1978), and 20 Jazz Funk Greats (1979). The group disbanded in 1981 but reunited in 2004, producing several new works, such as TG Now (2004) and Part Two: The Endless Not (2007).

During their 2004-2010 reunion, Throbbing Gristle’s performances included appearances at major events like Coachella, Primavera, and Tate Modern, as well as a three-day “studio installation” at the ICA. After disbanding in 2010, the group’s influence remained pervasive across various creative fields, including music, film, and contemporary art.
