Xmal Deutschland revisits early 1980s material with a remastered 3xLP boxset released by 4AD on 9 May 2025
Xmal Deutschland will release Gift: The 4AD Years on 9 May 2025, marking four decades since their early collaborations with the British label 4AD. The upcoming release is a limited-edition 3xLP boxset featuring newly remastered versions of their albums Fetisch and Tocsin, along with tracks from related EPs including Qual and Incubus Succubus II. All remasters were completed in 2025 at Abbey Road Studios.

The boxset includes original sleeve photography by Nigel Grierson, new cover artwork by Timothy O’Donnell based on designs by 23 Envelope, and photography by Peter Schulte. An additional photo booklet contains images by Kevin Cummins, Paul Slattery, Sheila Rock, among others, and features accompanying text by Chris Roberts.
Between 1983 and 1984, Xmal Deutschland released two albums on 4AD. The band gained attention in the UK through their live performances and early releases, including a tour supporting Cocteau Twins, and developed a following within the British post-punk and independent music scenes. The group, originally based in Hamburg, was active within the Neue Deutsche Welle movement and shared stages with acts such as DAF and Palais Schaumburg, maintaining connections with groups like Einstürzende Neubauten.
The initial line-up featured Anja Huwe on bass, Manuela Rickers on guitar, Fiona Sangster on keyboards, Caro May on drums, and Rita Simonsen on vocals. The line-up changed shortly after the band’s early recordings, with Huwe becoming the lead vocalist, Wolfgang Ellerbrock joining on bass, and Manuela Zwingmann replacing May on drums. This formation recorded the group’s debut album Fetisch and singles including Qual and Incubus Succubus II, all released by the Hamburg-based label ZickZack before the group signed to 4AD.
Fetisch was released in April 1983, co-produced by Ivo Watts-Russell, founder of 4AD, who was initially impressed by the band’s demo. The album’s sound drew comparisons to contemporaries such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Bauhaus, The Birthday Party, and Joy Division, but the group maintained a distinct identity through their use of German lyrics and rhythmically-driven arrangements. Tocsin followed in 1984, continuing their collaboration with 4AD before the band moved on to other projects.
The name Xmal Deutschland was taken from a political essay by Rudolf Leonhard, a German communist writer active in the early 20th century.
Anja Huwe, born in 1956 in Hamburg, is a German visual artist and former musician, primarily known for her role as the lead vocalist of Xmal Deutschland. Before joining the band, she studied visual arts and was involved in Hamburg’s local underground music and arts scene. She became the front figure of Xmal Deutschland after initially playing bass and then transitioning to vocals when the original line-up changed. After the band disbanded in the late 1980s, Huwe shifted her focus to visual art. Her work includes mixed-media projects and installations. In recent years, she has resumed activity in the music and art fields, including solo music projects and collaborations.
