Trevor Powers, the producer and songwriter behind Youth Lagoon, has announced the release of the album Rarely Do I Dream, scheduled for February 21, 2024, via Fat Possum Records. The announcement includes the debut of the single “Speed Freak” accompanied by a music video directed by Tyler T. Williams.

The album draws inspiration from Powers’ rediscovery of home videos from his childhood. Unearthed in the fall of 2023, these recordings influenced the themes and sonic textures of the project. The tapes, depicting moments such as family events and daily life, were integrated into the music through sampling and reworking. Powers described the album as a way to reconstruct fragments of his personal history within a fictionalized context.
The lead single, “Speed Freak,” blends elements of electronica and post-punk with a raw, pulsating energy. Powers explained that the song reflects on mortality and transformation, encapsulating the idea of release from constructed identities.
Background and Career of Trevor Powers
Trevor Powers, originating from Boise, Idaho, began releasing music under the moniker Youth Lagoon in 2011 with the album The Year of Hibernation. The project, characterized by introspective themes and experimental production, gained critical attention for its unique approach to blending lo-fi and dream-pop elements. Powers released additional albums, including Wondrous Bughouse in 2013 and Savage Hills Ballroom in 2015, before pausing the project in 2016.
During the hiatus, Powers pursued other creative endeavors, including solo work under his own name. He returned to Youth Lagoon in 2023 with Heaven Is a Junkyard, which marked a stylistic shift toward experimental Americana. Throughout his career, Powers has collaborated with notable producers and engineers, including Rodaidh McDonald, who contributed to the production of Rarely Do I Dream.
